The brief for this bestselling, highly-controversial was both vague and specific! Here we go:
I want something which isn’t overtly sexual, but isn’t chaste either, and which will not put off female readers, but which looks a bit controversial. I’m happy to have something simple, I just want it to look cool, a bit dangerous (but not too dangerous). I thought of Michel Houllebecq as a comparison but I’m not sure that’s right.

I started with some photographic concepts, but eventually pared it down to the simple typographic design which represented both the literary and the erotic nature of the book.
