About me

I currently work freelance offering the following services to publishers:

- design (internal, covers and digital formats)
- typesetting (InDesign, Arbortext 3b2, Photoshop, Illustrator)
- picture research and image commissioning
- project management
I freelance for companies such as Hodder Education, OUP, Larousse, EUP, Canongate, Birlinn, Penguin Books, Chambers Harrap, Leckie and Leckie, Mainstream, Scots Language Dictionaries and Whittles on a wide range of projects.
I have designed and set books in a variety of different languages including most European languages, Scottish Gaelic, Hindi, Chinese, Thai, Arabic, Kurdish, Vietnamese and Japanese. I am also very experienced in designing large format coffee-table books and for five years I worked directly with Alasdair Gray on his autobiography A Life in Pictures. I also worked with Steven Hall on his complex typographical novel Maxwell's Demon. I can work with Word-formatted documents or XML.

I have project-managed many different kinds of projects, from dictionaries, school and further education textbooks and teaching resources through to apps.

I am happy to work with in-house staff & your freelancers, but I can also suggest or seek out new editors, translators, app developers, etc to work on projects in a packaging capacity.

Before going freelance I was the Design and Prepress Manager at Chambers Harrap Publishers in Edinburgh where I managed a team of in-house design, programming and typesetting staff.
