Rare Special Powers and the Power of True Friends – Children's Book Illustration & Design
I collaborated with author Kirsty Trueman to illustrate and design Rare Special Powers and the Power of True Friends, a children's rhyming picture book inspired by her children, Tama and Kaani. The story explores themes of friendship, self-worth, and individuality, following Tama's journey to discover his own unique "power" and what makes every person special.
Based on Tama's experiences living with the rare genetic condition PURA Syndrome, the book was created to celebrate differences and encourage children to recognise the value and strengths within themselves and others.
My role involved both the illustration and complete layout design of the book, ensuring that the artwork and text worked together to create an engaging and emotionally meaningful reading experience.
Key Responsibilities

Problem Solving
Translated real people into appealing illustrated characters while retaining their unique personalities.
Created visuals that communicated sensitive themes in an uplifting and accessible way for young readers.
Balanced the emotional message of the story with playful and engaging artwork.
Designed page layouts that supported the rhythm and pacing of the rhyming text.
Developed a cohesive visual style that reinforced the book's themes of friendship, acceptance, and self-discovery.
This project highlights my ability to combine illustration, storytelling, and design to create children's books that communicate meaningful messages while remaining visually engaging and enjoyable for readers of all ages.
