In 1992 Renzo Piano Building Workshop together with Kohlbecker Architects won an international urban design competition for the Daimler-Benz sector in the reconstruction project of the Potsdamer Platz.
The city quarter Daimler-Benz, now owned by the SEB, has been planned as an urban district, which is based on a humanistic vision of the European city. It is designed on a human scale, which allows and promotes future modifications, changes and adjustments. Today there is a need to increase the productive capacity of this project. All buildings should be able to adapt to a new economic or functional condition without losing the respect of their original architectural qualities. The first step of this refurbishment starts with the former Debis building. With this development, SEB as building owners and Renzo Piano Building Workshop as architect want to create a real contribution to the dynamic development of the city district.
The Potsdamer Platz Arcades will be continued in the C1 building, but not as a simple shopping street, rather as a kind of “cathedral” space with a retail function. The atrium will be permanently available to the public and the goal is to create a stronger appeal with the ground floor area, which will allow for more public pedestrian flow across the atrium. There will be three entrances: the main access to the north; another in the northeast from the “Schellingstrasse” and one from the lake on the northwestern side. New tenant areas are provided for retail and catering use.
