ABOUT
For my Masters Project I created a 360° video to create a virtual reality experience. I conducted research into theories of life after death, the aim of which was to confront mainstream contemporary beliefs which are held on the topic of death.
My research covered the Hermetica, an Ancient Greek translation of Ancient Egyptian beliefs, Norse mythology, Vedic Mythology and many more historical topics, while also researching how death is viewed throughout contemporary culture, including artwork and literature.
The experience which was created represents a journey through light, from the visible light spectrum through to ultra violet light, this represents the journey from the physical dimension to the next.
During the project the research was collected into a Visual Summary, which consists of a large volume of work, theories and background research into the themes which were explored within the project. The volumes naturally split into Primary and Secondary research, and are available upon request.
The experience begins in the darkness of infrared light, the audience are then guided through the visible light spectrum, in an seemingly plain void. It is only when the ultraviolet light stage of the experience is entered that the quotes become visible.
The visible light spectrum represents the physical dimension, as everything that is understood in the physical dimension is created by the physical senses that only ‘work’ in a specific spectrum, such as visible light.
The experience aims to challenge the audiences perspective, not only because the quotes which are in front of them can not be seen until the ultraviolet stage, but also the quotes employed to encourage questions on about existence and the limits of perception.
The experience lasts beyond the artwork, as after the VR googles have been taken off the audience has conceptually entered the next realm, with a greater perspective and perception (not restricted by the bodily senses).
