ABOUT

Freedivers venture beneath the ice of frozen Lake Weissensee in the Austrian Alps to challenge their bodies and centre the mind. The usual risks of freediving are amplified by thin air at altitude, extreme cold and a hostile environment, where safety lies beyond a 20cm sheet of ice. As a result, the discipline requires calm, concentration, and clarity, fostering a state of being part of the environment rather than fighting against it.

This personal project sought to document the sport in a way that reflected the tranquil balance between the natural environment and the state of mind the athletes must get themselves in to undertake these dives.
