Russell Mountford Junior Designer

ABOUT

I was tasked by my employer to create a new branding image to promote the colleges latest enrolment campaign. They wanted something that the college had never used before, completely different to what the competition was using and was appealing to a younger audience.

I decided to put my skills in illustration to use. The current and past designers with in the company, didn't seem to hold this skill and a lot of their projects heavily used graphics and photography as a main factor and after research I discovered this was apparent through out the other colleges. I designed a range of flat, vector icons each displaying an image related to a course we offered at the college. Making sure not to go to obscure with my designs so people could link the image to a course without being told. The colour palette I used was bright to help them stand out at events and to add to the appeal to a young learner.

The icons went down well with the senior managers of the college and were used for the campaign. The icons were used in a range of different mediums including newspaper adverts, large scale banners, pull up banners, web graphics and even in the latest run of the prospectus. When used out in the field they really stood out and served their purpose well. They gave the college a fresh new look and reputation, the other colleges felt threatened and similar style of these designs soon started to appear. However, the one factor I was most proud of was the feedback from the school liaison team. They told me that upon going to events with these designs the young learners really engaged with them and found them helpful to turn to when enquiring about a course and they were drawn to the college's table because of those designs. Hearing this made me feel like I had achieved the task set to me.
