‘Fortune tellers’
Automotive Futures Paper
The business had decided to publish a little piece on the ominous-sounding ‘future of network development’ (networks in this instance being the automotive retail networks) and the uncertainly of the various scenarios challenging them over the next several years.
A worthy subject, and the usual preserve of the big consulting firms, it really needed a design-studio’s attitude to presenting what is, after all speculation usual dressed as certainly by management consultancies.
My approach here was to burst that ballon of pomposity with a tableaux around what this subject usually is, i.e. fortune telling, and designing a piece using the visual language of that trade to underpin that all this is really guesswork.
Sure, for Meda it’s actually guess-work based on actual experience (so our work goes beyond pure speculation as we’re actually busy making the future or retail networks) but it doesn’t hurt to poke a little fun at the way these kinds of ‘white papers’ (with all the seriousness and baggage of absolutism brings) and drag it back to reality.
And if you can’t be honest, who’s going to trust you with your future?
