One of the first things I do, almost, when starting a project is to give it a snappy name. Doesn’t matter to me whether it’s something that becomes A Brand Name {TM} or if, as likely as not it needs to go to the name guru’s and pass an extensive and expensive run in with the legal eagles, and my nom de plume gets swapped out. Things - complex things like projects - need names.
How else are you supposed to pick them up? It’s not for nothing a moniker also goes its other metaphor, the handle. Which, incidentally I always thought was an invention of CB radio slang - i.e. your ‘call sign’ or @ or # nowadays - but a quick check pushes it right back to the early c.18th. Which shows how useful some utilitarian is.
And why all the interest in names (I don’t hear you ask)?
I came across an edition of Ralph Ellison’s amazing novel ‘Invisible Man’ (which I’d never seen before) and about half way in found the line “…to name a thing is to make it.” Which is exactly what I realised I’d been doing (without actually realising it) all along.
Calling something to life means it needs to hear its name. And if you want it to live in everyone else’s imagination, it needs a name. Not ‘Project Secret Word’ nor a course or truncated description of it - or the dreaded acronym - but a proper Name.
Give it a go. Never know, you might see its name in lights down the line and you’ll know who called it.
