ABOUT
Project overview: the 3D label experience
This project challenged the limitations of traditional packaging design, transforming a series of personalised wine bottle labels for birthday celebrations into a memorable, multi-sensory gifting experience. My goal was to create an emotional resonance that would long outlast the occasion. The solution involved a strategic blend of high-touch craftsmanship (using materials like rhinestones, gold foil, and real hair fibre to add three-dimensional, tactile elements to the labels) and digital storytelling. By embedding a permanent QR code, each recipient could unlock a private, 2.5 to 3.5-minute video compilation of cherished memories set to their favourite song. This approach elevated the label from a passive 2D sticker to an interactive, shareable, and deeply personal keepsake.
Project title:
Beyond the bottle: interactive custom packaging & digital storytelling
Role:
Lead designer, strategist, and maker
Design and art direction: conceptualising, illustrating, and designing the personalised 2D label graphics.
Physical production and craftsmanship: printing, sourcing materials (rhinestones, hair fibre, false lashes, gold foil), and meticulously applying the 3D textural elements to each bottle.
Digital content creation: sourcing images/videos, editing and producing the mobile-friendly, nostalgic 6:19 memory videos, and sourcing individual audio tracks.
Experience strategy and implementation: developing the multi-sensory packaging strategy and generating/managing the permanent QR code link for video access.
Design challenge:
How might we elevate the commonplace wine bottle label from a flat, disposable sticker into a memorable, multi-sensory packaging experience that fosters deep emotional connection and becomes a lasting conversation piece?
Insight:
In an age of digital saturation, true luxury in gifting lies in deep personalisation and tactile engagement. A gift's value is amplified when it leverages both physical craftsmanship and digital nostalgia to encourage active participation and shared emotional resonance, moving beyond passive visual appeal.
Solution:
The personalised 3D label and digital memory system
A bespoke packaging system transforming a simple wine bottle into an interactive, five-step gifting journey:
Deep personalisation: designing the core label artwork based on a specific, meaningful photograph of each recipient, using vibrant colours to match their personality.
Tactile 3D elevation: implementing physical, handcrafted elements (rhinestones, gold foil, braided hair fibre, false eyelashes) onto the printed label to mimic defining features (beads, glasses, earrings) in the photo. This added texture, dimension, and physical interest, engaging the sense of touch and creating a premium, non-2D aesthetic.
Digital nostalgia: creating private, 6:19 mobile-friendly videos featuring curated images and videos of past memories, accompanied by a favourite song for each recipient.
Active engagement: integrating a QR code on the back label and wine bottle neck tag, linking directly to the private memory video, thereby requiring interaction (scanning) to unlock the full gift experience.
Lasting impression and shareability: ensuring the QR link remains active indefinitely and is controlled solely by the recipient, allowing them to revisit the memories and selectively share them, guaranteeing the project is talked about long after the gifts had been received and opened.
Craftsmanship and the multi-sensory execution
The core of this solution was moving beyond standard 2D design to create a physical interaction with the label itself. This required meticulous hand-finishing, turning each bottle into a bespoke, sculptural piece of personalised art.
My strategy involved analysing the recipients' favourite photographs and identifying key features to recreate physically, engaging the senses beyond sight, specifically touch and story.
The digital connection: activating nostalgia
Each bottle was completed with a permanent QR code placed on the back label and wine bottle neck tag. This code provided instant, mobile access to a private, 6:19 memory video featuring photographs and clips set to a song significant to the recipient. This final layer of the solution ensured the experience was not only beautiful and tactile but also emotionally resonant and infinitely shareable at the recipient’s discretion.
Project impact and key takeaways
This project successfully redefined personalized gifting packaging by leveraging a multi-disciplinary approach that spanned physical design, digital content creation, and strategic engagement.
Measurable success and client feedback
Elevated gifting experience: the goal of creating a "lasting impression" and making the gift a "talked-about" item was overwhelmingly achieved. The client reported that the recipients were surprised and deeply moved, treating the bottles as keepsake items rather than disposable packaging.
Sustained engagement: the permanent QR code ensures ongoing access to the digital memories, making the design relevant indefinitely. This transforms the wine bottle from a consumable item into a personal, curated archive.
Value perception: By introducing bespoke craftsmanship (hand-applied 3D elements) and exclusive digital content, the perceived and emotional value of the gift was significantly multiplied compared to a standard printed label.
Design principles demonstrated
Experience over product: the focus shifted from the wine inside to the experience of receiving, touching, and interacting with the packaging.
Sensory integration: successfully integrated the senses of sight, touch, and sound (via the video audio) into a single design solution, proving that packaging can be a dynamic, multi-sensory medium.
Physical-to-digital bridge: effectively utilized the QR code to seamlessly connect the handmade, physical artifact with the rich, personalized digital content, creating a complete and cohesive user journey.
Deep personalization: demonstrated the power of using specific biographical details (a favourite photo, specific accessories) to create designs that are immediately, emotionally resonant and unique to the individual.
