"Civil courts are supposed to keep the safe addresses of domestic violence survivors secret – but BuzzFeed News has spoken to two women who had theirs released to their abusive former partners."
This was an animated header illustration for Patrick Smith's BuzzFeed article 'This Is What It’s Like When A Court Tells Your Abusive Ex-Partner Where You Live,' which investigated a loophole within the UK court system which was allowing abusers to track their former partners.
I decided to depict a man lurking outside of a house with the paperwork discussed in the article that was allowing people to track their former partners (it was the required court documents people had to submit that other claimants had access to which were allowing people to be tracked). I used the location symbol familiar from digital maps to highlight the location aspect, and built upon the sinister feeling of the illustration with colour, ink splatters, and an animated staticky effect.
