Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli is the only school in the world dedicated to the teaching of the art of Mosaics. In fact, since 1922, it is the only school with a three-year professional course to become Master Mosaicist. In the last years the school has also become a huge tourist attraction, with more than 35k visitors per year.

In 2019 we were asked by the administration board to translate into moving images the story, the philosophy and the evolution of this school, by creating an institutional video and video contents for social media.

We followed students and teachers for a whole school year, we had access to the school archives, and we worked with the school historians to create a very meticulous storytelling, which took place both inside the school and around Spilimbergo, the city in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the region in the North-East of Italy, where Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli is located.

The soundtrack was specifically made for these videos and our composer collected sounds from the mosaic making process and used them to shape the rhythmic base of the original music. The music was a distinctive element to create a link between all the videos we made, as to recreate a sensorial experience for the viewer.

The institutional video was made with voice-overs in Italian and in English, and the video was shown in different official institutional events, such as the vernissage of the annual exhibition of the school works and the presentation of the excellences of the region held in the Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia palace.

The English version was displayed in Novato, California (USA), at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art during a portrait-mosaic exhibition, to tell the story of how the works came to life.
