ABOUT

The Born in Bradford project led by Professor John Wright is one of the largest research studies in the World, tracking the lives of over 30,000 Bradfordians to find out what influences the health and wellbeing of families. Using the findings to develop new and practical ways to work with families and health professionals to improve the health and wellbeing of communities.

Bradford was chosen as it is the sixth largest city in the UK, with a multi-ethnic population of more than 500,000 people. But the district suffers from high levels of deprivation as well as having some of the highest rates of childhood illness in the UK.

The 100 page casebound book chronicles the research which has taken place in the long-running project and features photographs of the participants taken over the years by Bradford-born photographer Ian Beesley alongside words by poet and broadcaster, Ian McMillan.

The cover design, a simple graphic reference to medical research and connection – the overlapping influences that effect health and wellbeing. The cover is printed on GF Smith Colorplan Adriatic blue, representing the NHS, Buckram embossed with the title design set in white foil, inner pages printed on uncoated recycled stock.

“I’m really, really proud of the book. It’s a book of beauty and it brings together all of the fantastic artwork and photos over 16 years. It is such an incredible story of how Born in Bradford came from nowhere really, to one of the biggest research studies in the world. It’s a treasure. We have done exhibitions and we do conferences all of the time, but to bring the science and the art together and to bring it into a book is something that will last forever. Rachael has a rare talent in her design and creativity. Her Born in Bradford hardback is a book of beauty and her skill and craftsmanship is inspiring.”
