ABOUT

Harper Macaw is a bean to bar craft chocolate manufacturer on a mission: turn chocolate into a force for tropical reforestation. Sourcing cacao directly from select farms in Brazil’s Atlantic and Amazon rainforests, they then work with non-profit partners to reinvest a portion of each sale in rainforest restoration and protection.
Our partnership with Harper Macaw began when we were approached to design their packaging and identity. Though the company is based in DC, we realized that the heart and soul of Harper Macaw was in Brazil.
Their mission and story were unique; we developed packaging that spoke to the purpose of the brand and successfully launched them into market.Several months later, we deepened our relationship with Harper Macaw by collaborating with them on a limited edition series of chocolate bars. To pay homage to our D.C. roots, we created The Political Series. Each chocolate bar represents a political party, issue or phrase, from Left Wing to Tea Party to Filibuster.
The packaging in red, white and blue with bold graphics and customized illustrations are intentionally designed to be provocative with a healthy dose of tongue and cheek humor. We sketched extensively, taking concepts and thinking through rounds of graphic styles, illustration, painting, typography and color. From simple and bold to more layered design – what we imagined, we created, all in-house.Touching every part of this project from concept, design and copywriting to product creation; we worked closely with Harper Macaw to develop flavors based on the “characters” of each bar from Red State with its mix of red berries and chocolate to Tea Party an Earl Grey infused dark chocolate bar; we created six unique flavors for six unique designs and copy that adds humor during a high-stakes time and often contentious season. The Political Series was launched into market in the spring with great fanfare, global press and to no one’s surprise – flavors that have already sold out.
