If baking is a science, then it’s only logical to create a playful, modern wedding cake guide for the Summer 2015 Washingtonian Bride and Groom issue. We looked to science to build our story, developing a five-step guide on how to execute the finer points of wedding day cake; from when to serve to slicing a picture perfect piece to the graceful feeding of the perfect slice. The cakes were the stars, smooth fondant covered cakes with nontraditional flourishes, shot on textured pastel backgrounds. Custom type for the opening spread, subtle line drawings and simple illustrations, layouts were designed to let the beauty of the cakes speak for themselves.
