ABOUT

Approached by New Columbia Distillers, the rst distiller in The District since Prohibition, for a new product launch, Green Hat Gin; we understood the need to not only design memorable packaging and identity, but to create something that made a big splash to introduce both the distillery and the product into market.

The story behind “Green Hat” is uniquely tied to D.C. The spirit is named after George Cassidy who, when the rest of the country was dry, kept his Capitol Hill customers happily stocked. Caught with six bottles of gin, Cassidy was arrested. Later writing a front-page piece for The Washington Post, “The Man in the Green Hat” detailing his 10-year career supplying bootleg liquor — he exposed the hypocrisy of a Congress aunting the rules it imposed on America.
The client’s story was already a great one, but it now needed memorable design. We looked to history, drawing inspiration from Prohibition-era newspaper clippings and dust-bowl catalogs. After almost six months of working on the design and obtaining the government approvals, the gin began to ow.

Today, Green Hat Gin has become one of the leading gin brands in the U.S. with numerous industry tasting.
