About me
The effects of the current financial crisis have had a significant impact on the global communications industry. Public relations firms have seen a reduction in new business, with many firms also losing clients and income. As a result, new employment opportunities have been few and far between for graduates like myself looking to begin a career in PR. In the past year I have written to many firms, and have received the same reply on numerous occasions: they like my CV and past experience, but do not have any opportunities available in the foreseeable future.Although I have been unable to gain permanent employment in the current market, this has not dampened my spirits, and I have done everything I can to increase my knowledge and understanding of the communications industry through embarking upon extended internships and voluntary positions in the public relations sector. As a result, I now have a wide range of experience within the industry, having worked in the charity sector, and also extensively with corporate and financial clients. Although I have gained the majority of my experience through internships, the tasks demanded by these positions have often been along the lines of those undertaken by an account executive. For example, I have direct experience with writing and selling press releases, media monitoring, chasing journalists for forward features and events, analysing coverage, writing reports and media programmes and doing extensive research in order to get leads for targeted new clients. In total, I now have well over a year of relevant work experience.I have had excellent feedback from all the different companies where I have worked. The prevailing economic climate has been the only factor preventing me from gaining a permanent role, and I would be happy to provide references from any of my past positions to show the regard in which I was held.I am now looking for the opportunity to gain a permanent role where I can put my proven skills to good use, gain more experience and forge a successful career for myself. I appreciate any feedback that you might have, and I would be available to meet at any time at your convenience.Best Regards,Erica Shery
