Sound is one of those crafts that becomes most visible when something goes wrong.

When it is done properly, the audience rarely stops to think about it. A film feels right, a commercial has weight, a voice sits naturally in the mix — and the work behind all of that almost disappears.

That was what interested me about Victor Popescu and Square Sound Studio.

Victor has spent more than two decades working with sound, moving between sound design, music, post-production and his own electronic projects. He founded Square Sound Studio in Bucharest and built a working environment around something that is difficult to fake: very high standards and an almost obsessive attention to detail. Victor’s career also extends into electronic music through projects such as Brazda lui Novac and Mathmatrix.

I wanted the film to show that world without turning it into a technical demonstration.

Instead of explaining every piece of equipment or every stage of audio post-production, the story stays close to Victor himself — the way he listens, the way he thinks about sound, the discipline behind the studio and the years of experience that make difficult decisions look effortless.

The film was directed, shot and edited by Mugur Marin / N-trance Media as part of the CinematicBizStories series.

Visually, the challenge was to make an essentially invisible profession feel tangible. The studio gave us that language: speakers, consoles, screens, instruments, cables, small gestures and the concentration of someone listening for details most people would never notice.

I kept the camera close and the lighting controlled, using the environment rather than trying to transform it into something it was not. The studio itself needed to remain believable — a place where real work happens every day.

The editing followed the same idea. It needed rhythm, but not the rhythm of a conventional advertisement. I wanted enough space for Victor’s personality, humour and precision to come through naturally.

What emerged was less a company presentation and more a portrait of professional standards.

The film is about Square Sound Studio, but it is also about a wider idea that interests me in these portraits: the work that clients rarely see, but that defines the quality of everything they eventually experience.

Victor later shared the film himself on LinkedIn, describing Square Sound Studio through the CinematicBizStories piece — which, for me, was a good indication that the portrait felt true to the person and the place.
