ABOUT

Description

I developed campaign artwork for STOP THE TRAFFIK’s public awareness campaign during the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, producing a series of bold visuals designed to raise awareness of human trafficking among both local communities and the large influx of international visitors attending the tournament.

Brief

Major international sporting events can increase the risk of human trafficking, making public awareness a critical part of prevention efforts. The campaign needed to communicate a serious message quickly and clearly in high-footfall environments, encouraging people to recognise potential warning signs and feel confident reporting concerns.

The creative also needed to work across language barriers and remain impactful within seconds of being seen.

Summary

I developed a series designs built around stark imagery, high-contrast colour and concise, impactful messaging. The visual approach used distressed handprints and stencil-style typography to create an immediate sense of disruption within busy public environments.

Short, direct headlines such as “Don’t Let Them Disappear” and “Trapped in Plain Sight” were designed to challenge assumptions around trafficking and highlight that exploitation often exists in everyday settings rather than hidden spaces.

The campaign focused on clarity and immediacy, using a stripped-back visual language to ensure the message could be understood instantly by diverse audiences, including both local residents and visiting football supporters.

Impact

The work demonstrates how simple, arresting visual communication can distil a complex social issue into something immediate and actionable. By prioritising clarity and emotional impact, the campaign encouraged audiences to pause, recognise the signs of trafficking, and understand the importance of reporting concerns.

Seen in public environments during the tournament, the campaign resonated with local communities, with people engaging directly with the messaging in situ — reinforcing its ability to cut through in busy, real-world settings and communicate effectively across language and cultural barriers.
