ABOUT

The brief was to create a cover for The Unfragile Mind by Gavin Francis, a book exploring mental health and emotional resilience. The challenge was to visualise psychological strength without resorting to clichés of brokenness or isolation. Communicating both vulnerability and endurance in a single image.

My concept focused on the idea that resilience is rarely individual but instead is built through community. The central figure, representing the individual navigating mental health, is rendered in deeper, cooler tones. This darker palette grounds the figure and reflects the internal weight and solitude that can accompany psychological struggle. In contrast, the supporting hand is formed by interwoven human figures in warmer, layered colours. These overlapping shapes represent society and the many visible and invisible influences that uphold us.

The colour contrast was intentional. The darker blues create introspection, while the surrounding warm tones introduce plurality. Together they create visual tension but also balance. The upward curve of the composition suggests structural support rather than rescue.

The illustration was hand drawn digitally in Procreate, using shape driven forms and controlled negative space to maintain clarity at both small and large scale.

The book has since been widely distributed, positioning resilience as supported endurance.
