ABOUT

On 5 May 2023, COVID-19 global health emergency was officially declared over, after more than three years. The global effort to develop a vaccine was followed by an even greater challenge: to make it accessible to the world’s population of 8 billion and deliver it to some of the most remote corners of the globe.

By April 2021, the vaccine had been rolled out in nearly all countries. As 2021 came to a close, there was enough supply of the COVID-19 vaccine to distribute large quantities to countries across the globe. The pressing question then became: How could the vaccines get to where they were needed to vaccinate those most at risk?

In collaboration with data professionals, scientists, and photojournalists from across the globe, CEPI, Gavi, UNICEF, and WHO have developed a digital time capsule to recognise the COVID-19 vaccine distribution.

The remarkable stories from the vaccine delivery have been preserved in a film created by FutureDeluxe Sydney, for future generations to see a digital replica of the very device used to carry the life-saving vaccines.

In each landscape a subtle human touch is added to tell the story of the cold box’s journey, in which a unique individual has carried the cold box through, over, and around these remote places.

The film serves as the opening to The Delivery online experience pairing data-driven storytelling with images from the archives of the organisations and plays on the large screen in the foyer of the WHO’s headquarters in Geneva.
