ABOUT

878 AD: Winchester Revealed is a unique collaboration between Sugar Creative, Ubisoft, and Hampshire Cultural Trust, creating a major new immersive visitor attraction situated in Winchester. As the immersive app element of a two part exhibition it takes groundbreaking city scale AR technologies alongside imagery from Assassin's Creed Valhalla, bringing the Viking age to life like never before.

Located in Winchester, the app opens up new worlds within the streets of this historical city. Combining the latest in geolocated AR technology with gripping narrative, users can uncover hidden stories and see history come to life with placeable AR scenes.

The app works as part of ‘878 AD’, a major immersive physical exhibition in the centre of Winchester. Audiences are invited to explore a key moment in our nation’s history, the defeat of the Vikings by Alfred the Great at the Battle of Edington in 878.

The app will then explore the aftermath of the battle, how the city was rebuilt and tell stories of a prosperous and peaceful kingdom. Each scene will show audiences a different aspect of Anglo-Saxon life and enhance the experience with games and puzzles to solve from pottery to language.

With this experience Sugar Creative have extended the exhibition space to encompass an entire city, encouraging play and exploration alongside historical storytelling and wonder.
This city scale project is a prime example of what is now possible in the world of immersive technologies and how they can enrich our experiences of the world around us.
