ABOUT

People Power Passion is an ambitious programme of events that took place across five months in 2019, to commemorate the 1919 Peace Day Riots. The programme brought Luton’s diverse cultures and communities together to celebrate the vibrant town, empowering local residents and giving a voice to those who are rarely heard.

The programme called for a bold, recognisable brand to help attract audiences, artists, volunteers and participants.

I created a logo inspired by protest signs and headlines, which is intended to be attention-grabbing and unapologetic, using orange - a warm, energetic colour which offers high-visibility and has connotations of creativity and change. The colour has strong links to the town, as orange is associated with Luton Town Football Club and easyJet at Luton Airport. It also represents fire, hinting at the events of the Peace Day Riots. The visual language of the brand is extended with bold pencil lines and photographs of protests in Luton, from 1910 to present day, to create a striking, hand-crafted aesthetic.

The branding was applied across a variety of outputs, including flyers, newspaper adverts, billboards, lamppost banners, hoardings, posters, roller banners, film graphics, an event programme and a celebration booklet to document the project.

CLIENT REVIEW

Sophie worked with us over a number of months on this project and I couldn’t recommend her enough. We started with the branding for the project and worked right through a range of promotional materials, graphics for films and celebration/evaluation publications. The project evolved as we moved along, with a number of client voices needing to be accommodated. Sophie was exceptionally pleasant to work with, even when the brief evolved. The brand has become very well known across the town and is well-loved. Highly recommend working with this exceptional designer.
