ABOUT

Dogs have played a big part in the development of the human race, accompanying us for the last 20 - 40,000 years. They have guarded us from danger, helped us to find, hunt and catch food, transported us and more recently aided the handicapped in physical and therapeutic ways. They have been our friends, the term “loyal” being synonymous with a dogs relationship to its owner.

In return we have altered both their physical and personal characteristics through selective breeding. Our involvement in dog breeding has had positive and negative consequences.

Black Dog is the start of a project looking at the variety of breeds of one colour. By putting them on the black plinth I wanted to emphasise their physicality, stature, quirks and anomalies. I wanted to show them as beautiful sculptural objects as a way of considering our relationship with dogs and our hand in their creation.
