ABOUT

Introducing George - a speculative AI prototype exploring whether emotionally difficult characters could create more meaningful digital interactions.

Developed by Circus in collaboration with WAM, George began as a near-final proof-of-concept for a client exploring AI-powered sales training and objection-handling simulations.

At a time when most AI assistants were being designed to be endlessly agreeable, the project explored the opposite idea: what happens when AI develops attitude?

The concept centred around creating a personality-driven AI capable of simulating difficult conversations, challenging behaviour and emotionally unpredictable interactions. Designed as a potential training tool for sales teams and live-event environments, George was intended to help users rehearse objection handling and navigate uncomfortable client conversations in a more realistic and emotionally engaging way.

The result was George, an emotionally volatile, deeply unhelpful customer service chatbot who sighs, overshares personal frustrations, derails conversations and occasionally spirals into Wham lyrics. Equal parts grumpy retail worker, tragic poet and malfunctioning jukebox, George intentionally subverted the polished, frictionless behaviour typical of mainstream AI systems.

Rather than relying on static concepts or speculative mockups, the team developed a fully functioning interactive prototype complete with conversational logic, behavioural experimentation, interface design and character-driven interactions. While rough around the edges, the project demonstrated a working model of personality-led AI that moved beyond visual exploration into live behavioural execution.

Visually, the experience combined neumorphic UI principles, cinematic character styling and conversational UX experiments to create a deliberately strange but emotionally resonant interface. Every interaction was designed to reinforce George’s awkward charm and emotional unpredictability, reframing AI not simply as utility, but as performance, narrative and character.

Although the concept was explored with a live client context and developed to near-final execution, the project ultimately remained an experimental prototype rather than a released commercial product. However, George became a compelling exploration of emotional AI, behavioural simulation and narrative interaction design, demonstrating how humour, friction and personality might reshape future experiences across training, entertainment and immersive digital storytelling.
