ABOUT
Friend, Director and frequent collaborator Jason Bock approached me early this year with the concept for this G-Shock web spot. I was more than keen to be a part of it and got to work on the sound straight away. I usually use a few references for each project, but was never provided any by Jason or the team at Fishnclips. However, it wasn't a big deal, because as soon as I saw the draft edit of the spot I knew exactly what needed to happen. It needed big, movie-trailer type swells that cut into near silence for dramatic effect. Big bass drops and impacts; that sort of thing. At points, I imagined a cacophony of sounds building into an discordant, irritating mess of noise that pulled the viewer/listener in.
There was but one issue; Jason had approached me about 2 weeks before I was due to relocate to London (UK) for two years. He assured me the deadline was set a few days before my leaving date and that it wouldn't be a problem. Knowing how things go in this industry (edits change, deadlines move etc.), I prepared myself to work while on the move. I had made a start on the Sound Design and both parties were extremely happy with the way it was going and when I told Jason that I would be out of service for a few days, he was very understanding about it. I ended up working on the project while waiting for a flight in Melbourne (AUS) and finishing it once I arrived in London.
For the entire project, I worked without music as it was still being composed and finalised up until the last minute. When the spot was recently released on Vimeo/Facebook, I was very impressed with what the composer had come up with as it complimented my sound design nicely. I am very proud of this project and it is definitely an excellent addition to my showreel.
