ABOUT

BRIEF
Design a contemporary, industrial interior within a two-floor 19th century space, housing a barber studio, a tattoo studio and a photography studio.

APPROACH
The client’s influences included techno and electro dance music scene, Berghain and Tresor (Berlin nightclubs), minimalism aesthetics and industrial materials.

It was key to not over-design the space, I left lots of the original building materials and interior fixtures on display, including exposed brick and concrete work. I worked with a minimal pallete inspired by welded steel and used oak veneer on fixed, bespoke furniture such as the custom-built DJ booth, reception desk, waiting area seating booth and coffee tables.

The Scaffold Tree Chandeliers were designed specifically for this interior and client to introduce some organic patterns of form and light, with the hung chandelier incorporating artificial foliage.

RESULT
The studios have been up and running for almost a year and the interior, lighting and furniture designs have been a huge hit with both my client and his customers. The flexibility of the design and the use miniature sensory lighting installations included throughout the ground floor and basement spaces have allowed the client to host events, make short films and plan a gallery event.

This project also allowed me, two frequent collaborators: my husband Charles Turtle and brother-in-law Adam Turtle to work together, with Charles providing brand identity and graphic design and Adam providing web design.

We are currently exploring the potential of a more formal partnership, offering these combined services as a single offering.
