ABOUT

CONCEPT:
A personal project where I applied High-key lighting similar to that of the 1930s -1941 Hollywood movies aiming to reduce contrast & shadow ratios in a scene. I chose to use the High-key technique on four unrelated subjects in four different scenarios to ascertain whether I could create one synergistic fine-art collection.

EXECUTION:
In applying traditional High-key, I rendered my images in Black & White, my favoured photographic genre. I made sure grey tones were reduced to 18% points but retained near-solid blacks in critical areas of each photograph. Also, I maintained structural & tonal definitions in mid-range regions of each subject. Out-of-focus backgrounds were allowed to fade into formless white.
The real challenge was to apply High-key to four distinctly different scenarios, FIGURE, FAUNA, FLORA & FABRICATED (structures & objects). Various sources illuminated my subjects; direct sunlight, others in ambient light, open shade (overcast in one) and mixed artificial lighting. I enhanced four of my studies with fill-in strobe lighting; one outdoor and three indoor locations.
