About me

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm excited to hear about the role of Copywriter, and would love to find out more about the position. I believe my past experience as a copywriter and sub-editor will undoubtedly assist me in fulfilling the duties of the post effectively.

Most recently, I worked at Groupon as a creative copywriter for a year and a half, and then as a sub-editor for a year. During my time at the e-commerce company, I was successful in adjusting content, tone and style for specific audiences, in fact-checking, and in researching businesses thoroughly, and I was praised for my attention to detail and "nit-picky" knowledge of grammar and spelling, which was also aided by my degree in English. Other key tasks as a sub-editor included creating catchy newsletter headlines, giving constructive feedback to copywriters, and publishing copy onto the live site using a CMS. I believe that these skills would lend themselves readily to the responsibilities of writing online copy for the diverse clients of the company.

My writing experience extends to outside the office, where I am a freelance journalist. I've had a versatile range of work published for various websites and publications, including political and cultural news site, The Platform; popular science site, AskTheExperts; and top UK "glamour mag", Asiana - and have just had a feature commissioned by world-renowned US magazine, The Atlantic. I am a prolific user of social media: especially in today's digital age, I find these tools - especially Twitter () and Facebook - undeniably helpful in marketing my own written work professionally and generating awareness for my "brand". At Groupon, I assisted in social media campaigns, writing blogs for the company's site, and subbing "quirky deals" written to boost interaction with customers.

I run two blog sites: a new website about pop culture and entertainment, featuring reviews and commentary focused on TV and movies (); and , which contains more longform, humorous pieces on lifestyle themes such as food and music. Managing my own blogs has given me a firm knowledge of site maintenance and data analysis, including dealing with WordPress, SEO and Google Analytics.

On a personal level, I believe I possess qualities that would allow me to fit without difficulty in this role. I work conscientiously and to strict deadlines both individually and in teams, and my affability and sense of humour have assisted in building strong relationships in the workplace in the past. Regular communication with sales, design and project management was an essential part of my last role, to ensure that copy was satisfactory from all perspectives, and so I would have no qualms with managing copy flow, or liaising with clients or other departments.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and attached CV. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Talib Visram
