Director boards are specifically for the director. These drawings are made in an earlier stage of the ideation process. Mostly the dicretor personally creates these drawings to brief a storyboard artist who might then go on to create a full color presentation board. Sometimes the illustrator is assigned to the director to help quickly visualize the initial ideas. These initial sketches may either be in the form of a storyboard or as individual drawings detailing the action in individual scenes/shots.
