Crafting a Brand That Writes Its Own Story: Chapter One

Our mission was straightforward: eliminate the guesswork from brand decisions. We aimed to create a decision making framework rooted in insight, understanding the needs of the individuals being sold to, and ultimately, the beneficiaries of the business: the students. If we achieved that, we’d done well. If we accomplished that while delivering true visual distinction? Well, that’s worth raising a cuppa to.

Listening First, Branding Second

From the outset, we knew the key to success was speaking to everyone. Decision making behind closed doors might be enough for the business to tick along, but the real opportunity lay in building a brand with its audience at its heart. The client’s trust was our biggest asset, they gave us carte blanche, even allowing for a name change.

We spoke to everyone the brand was currently engaging with and those it aspired to reach. Across 16 qualitative interviews, a pattern emerged: most people thought they knew best. This presented its own challenges, as everyone needed to feel “seen” in the final delivery.

What we heard was illuminating. Stakeholders emphasised the importance of “telling it our own way.” They saw IFG as a bespoke service provider, a true partnership rather than a transactional relationship. We also discovered that the existing name lacked equity, though a nod to the umbrella brand in the new identity was deemed valuable for highlighting scale.

A Personal Touch, Built to Last

Internal interviews with stakeholders revealed a crucial insight: the senior leadership team’s accessibility was perceived as a defining strength. Clients valued knowing they could reach Managing Director Matt Went directly. It wasn’t just a current advantage; it was a long term commitment. This consistency became a cornerstone of the brand ethos we were developing.
Armed with a distinct USP, we faced our next challenge: creating standout in a traditional space while ensuring the brand served as a platform to champion the schools it worked with. During tender processes, the brand needed to coexist seamlessly with partner schools, ensuring it was always their story being told.

A Bold Vision That Resonated

As we developed the brand, we reengaged consultants and schools to gauge their thoughts on our direction. For the first time in our experience, we received unanimous agreement, it was bold, innovative, and disruptive in all the right ways. With unwavering support from IFG, we had the confidence to proceed.

The Final Chapter: Building the Brand

Storytelling became the backbone of the brand, inspiring a design rooted in traditional book typesetting and bespoke illustration. This approach not only aligned with the brand’s narrative but also set it apart in a crowded market.

Recognizing the unique needs of this project, we created assets that prioritized print, a refreshing divergence in a digital first era. To support a printed tender for the prestigious St Paul’s Prep School, we commissioned bookbinders to craft 166 page journals featuring a bespoke first chapter that told the brand’s story. The books used authentic 19th century finishing processes, adding a tactile richness to the delivery.

The Results: A Multifaceted Launch

To date, our work includes postcards and business cards featuring hand numbered illustrations, a printed sales brochure, an event stand, a launch film, a website, and the crafted journals. We’ve also supported three tenders and are midway through a 12 week LinkedIn launch campaign.

The brand doesn’t just stand out; it invites engagement. By blending bold creativity with strategic insight, Chapter One now has a narrative as compelling as the schools it represents.
