To Whom It May Concern:

I am contacting you in regard to the recently advertised vacancy of 'Copywriter' in Greater Manchester. Please accept this covering letter as my formal application for the role. I have attached my CV and hope you will find it useful when considering me.

As my CV will show I have enjoyed an extensive and varied career within the media. In recent years I have been fortunate enough to work for newspapers and magazines, radio and television, as well as for a variety of web sites and applications; where my primary focus has been writing, editorial oversight, digital production and content management, all of which are central to my current role at Sky News in London.

Having graduated from university with a degree in journalism, I spent the early part of my career working in an editorial capacity for the Press Association, websites such as Data Monitor, the South Wales Evening Post and Insider magazines in Manchester. In all of these roles, and subsequent one during my time in London, I have been responsible for the writing, subbing, proof reading and editing of copy, both long and short, as well as the writing of headlines, stand firsts and captions.

I should mention that during my time in London I was first employed on a freelance basis for a number of national newspapers and magazines before finding full-time employment at IPC Media, where I worked across a host of magazines and web sites for the company. Before being offered a digital production and online writing role at Sky News, I was offered the role of marketing copywriter at IPC. At the time I believed it better to gain more digital production experience, especially in a busy news environment such as Sky News, and this is not a decision I have regretted. I have gained an invaluable amount of technical competence from my time here and improved my skill base considerably; skills which I hope to make use of in future employment.

However, I am now eager to continue my career as a copywriter, building on my previous experience of writing and editing for newspapers, magazines, web sites, radio, television and mobile applications.

I personally consider myself to be a strong and effective writer with excellent communication skills and first-rate editorial judgement. I am enthusiastic, creative, collaborative, highly literate and always willing to think outside the box when it comes to problem solving and developing new concepts. More than this, I always welcome a challenge and enjoy working in fast-paced, deadline driven environments.

I would like to add that I always work well with others, while also being able to provide support, guidance, editorial oversight and direction to those who need it. I have excellent references and these are available on request.
