South Africa has one of the highest femicide rates in the world. 5,578 women were murdered in one year; a staggering 33.8% increase YoY.
Government promises to tackle the crisis repeatedly faded, leaving victims forgotten and the public despairing at their voices being ignored.
So instead of another protest, we held something the government couldn’t ignore.
We organised a funeral for the thousands of murdered women, with a casket 33.8% larger than normal, transforming collective grief into collective action. The casket was shrouded in Zulu beadwork, each bead representing a murdered woman.
The funeral procession travelled the country, building momentum, and culminating in a Women’s Shutdown on the eve of the G20 Summit. Purple turned into a visible symbol of solidarity, with landmarks illuminated, millions of social media avatars changed, and activism reignited.
The campaign generated over 2Billion impressions, 1.1Million signatures, and led to GBVF being declared a national disaster.
