ABOUT

With so much talking about paper and printing and their impact on the environment, it’s hard to decide what to believe in, isn’t it? Enter Two Sides, a non-profit organisation that aims to strengthen confidence in the graphic communications industry. They have provided extensive evidence to bust some well-known myths and we’ve collected a few of the most common statements to show that the truth can be quite different from what you may think.

Myth: Paper is bad for the environment
Fact: Paper is a truly renewable material

Paper is made from wood – and as such, it is a natural and renewable resource. In fact, it is one of the few truly renewable products in the world. This means that while some other materials we also use on a daily basis are limited in nature (once consumed, it will no longer be available) wood can be cultivated. Isn’t it great to know we can give back to nature what we took from it? :)

Myth: The paper industry is destroying our forests
Fact: Most paper used in the printing industry is sourced from responsibly managed forests

The printing industry isn’t evil – and we understand that what we take care of, we have more of. With this in mind, there are a number of trusted certification schemes, for example FSC, that ensure the wood used to make printing paper comes from sustainable forest sources.
Good to know: FSC, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council, is an international non-profit organisation that promotes the environmentally, socially and economically-viable management of the world’s forests. Read more on their website.

Myth: Paper is wasteful
Fact: Paper is one of the most recycled materials in the world

Some materials have an extremely short life and are single-use. Not paper! Paper can be easily recyclable, transformed and re-used many times over.

It’s a fact that paper is one of the most recycled materials in the world. In Europe alone, the rate for paper recycling is 72% - an outstanding number when considering that the maximum theoretical recycling rate is 78%.

Want more positive news? In Europe, paper is recycled not once, not twice, but 3.6 times and 54% of the fibre for Europe’s paper comes from paper recycling. We think that’s awesome and we are huge advocates of recycling and are happy to support recycling in everything we do.
