ABOUT
In partnering with Canon Central and North Africa and New African Magazine on #CelebrateAfrica, Picfair was proud to help build a high-profile campaign that traced the full life cycle of an image: from the photographer and their camera, through Picfair’s marketplace, to the pages of an international publication.
Hosted on our website, #CelebrateAfrica encouraged African residents from all walks of life to share their best images that challenged stereotypes ― documenting modern stories that went beyond the hoary cliches. Image categories open for submission were: “People”, “Nature” and “City Life”, and we received an overwhelming amount of high-quality photography from a range of African photographers. Picfair was created to introduce emerging photographers to the world, and it was truly thrilling to see stunning entries pouring in from across the continent as part of the competition.
Over 2,500 on-the-ground entries were submitted, from photographers in 42 African countries. The stunning collection covers everything from vibrant fashion in the streets of Kenya’s Kibera to an indigenous tribe in South Sudan, to an orphaned elephant at the David Sheldrick Orphanage in Nairobi being fed by his minders.
The results have been truly remarkable and we’re delighted to have such a colourful collection on offer to publishers, helping them tell their stories with authenticity. We’ve also seen an extremely positive response from our community across social media, who’ve joined us in celebrating and raising awareness of the rich visual diversity of Africa.
Winners were announced at Canon’s event in Nigeria on May 3rd with a variety of Canon prizes handed out including holidays, DSLR cameras, expert workshops and more. The images will remain available to license for buyers everywhere on our website and a selection of the photos will be used by IC Publications, and many others, to bring fresh visual perspective of the continent to their magazines.
