I'd photographed Ben Howard performing live shortly before this portrait shoot. The live performance was lit by candle light - it was beautifully atmospheric but not entirely conducive to making good photos. I later found out that Ben doesn't like to be photographed and I have a feeling the candles were there as a nod to this. These portraits were made back stage in Manchester shortly, very shortly, before soundcheck. The writer had taken the 45 minutes we were allocated and used up over an hour of this. This did allow me to take a lot of test shots however.
