PHd Design x Free at Last: Charting a Course of Hope - Empowering Young People Through Narrative Design (Concept, Execution, Results)

Concept:
Imagine a journey – a visual map that unfolds the story of a child's life, from wobbly first steps to navigating the complexities of adulthood. This was the vision behind PHd Design's collaboration with Free at Last, a Birmingham-based charity supporting young people and their families. The challenge? To bridge the gap between a child's lived experience and the support offered by Free at Last.

Execution:
The solution? A captivating narrative wall graphic, the centrepiece of Free at Last's main hall. Inspired by the familiar cadence of "We're Going on a Bear Hunt," the graphic charts this life journey. Divided into four distinct age zones (0-4, 5-11, 11-16, 16+), it employs relatable imagery and key words. Words like "friendship," "bullying," and "parental separation" resonate with young people, sparking self-reflection and prompting them to identify moments where they might need support.

Results:
The power lies in the narrative. By mirroring a familiar children's book and using universally understood emotions, the graphic transcends language barriers and cultural backgrounds. It becomes a conversation starter, a bridge between a child's experience and the support available. Children, young people, and their carers can see themselves reflected in the journey, fostering a sense of understanding and hope.

Empowering Through Design:
Free at Last staff have witnessed firsthand the impact of the graphic. It empowers young people to recognise challenges and opens a dialogue with their carers about seeking help. The graphic doesn't provide all the answers, but it acts as a roadmap, guiding young people and their families towards the support offered by Free at Last.
