ABOUT

BRIEF
An artists residency project, working in partnership with a performance artist, we explored where lighting design and installation and performance intersected in interpreting ideas of person and presence in Stanislaw Lem’s 1961 novel ‘Solaris’.

APPROACH
We worked within the gallery context, using lines of text, light and found objects, and physical interpretation to create performed responses to Lem’s concept of simulacra.

RESULT
We create a series of installations within the gallery that were exhibited long side a film of spoken word, text and moving images recorded from our experiments. These installations combined displayed notional forms of presence, relation and containment through use of costume and scale, domestic furnishings and icons of deities, moving and performing light, combined to suggest the idea of a relatable ‘other’.
