Patrick's work

About Patrick

I am a creative and dynamic postgraduate linguist, seeking employment as a Copywriter. I believe that my training in linguistics and rhetoric, as well as my innovation and unique perspective, would make me the ideal candidate to complement any copywriting team.

I graduated with a Master of Studies in Linguistics from the University of Oxford; as such, I am adept at expressing concepts in a clear and well-structured manner, and am quite comfortable engaging with language data in any genre or context. My studies (including a completed thesis) focused on language change: how speakers interact with language differently over time, salient patterns that fuel changes in meaning and form, and principles of language evolution. This degree has allowed me to develop an in-depth perspective on the nature of communicative practices. I am currently enrolled to pursue a Master of Research in Rhetoric at Royal Holloway, University of London, beginning October 2012. My current research concerns political rhetoric, and the spread of neologisms through the media.

I have extensive experience working in retail; in my 5 years' employment at a department store, I had the opportunity to liaise with both product merchants and marketing representatives, as well as interact with customers. As such, I believe I am able to bring an intuitive level of customer experience to brand marketing. I have gained experience from both administrative and editorial positions, and through extra-curricular involvements in my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, I have gained experience in project management. Completing my Masters thesis allowed me to demonstrate efficient task prioritization and deadline management, and the ability to prioritize tasks in situations of pressure.

I have a committed interest and passion concerning the use of language as a social tool; I have thrived in pursuing academic investigations concerning the interactions between language and speaker, and have extensive academic experience in language analysis. I am extremely comfortable with written material, both in formal and colloquial registers. I am able to write clearly and succinctly, and can provide accurate interpretation in a wide range of linguistic contexts. As a creative, ambitious rhetorician, with a unique and detailed perspective on language use, I believe my skills and experiences would prove beneficial to any company looking to communicate brand values effectively.
