ABOUT
Mutatio was a collaborative project that started as part of our Enterprise and Industry Modules in the second year of University. The Research portion is not included here as there wasn't much in the way of visuals. This is because, at this stage, we were only working to create a business plan in our respective groups.
The work featured is the follow-up to that plan, for the Practice module. Although again, I didn't have much imagery to out together as I worked very quickly to produce the required prints, ideas and final garment; with a lack of process imagery taken throughout.
The materials I worked with were all upcycled from old clothing and soft furnishings, sourced from the Military via the Uni and a recycling company I approached myself. We were provided with one of each military garment type per group: Camouflage Jacket; Boiler Suit; Shirt; Jumper; and Navy Jacket/Coat. Additionally, I sourced a floral bedding set from a charity shop that I then over-printed via the silk-screen method; and I used a large, insulated curtain from the many bags the recycled company gave me for the majority of the final Trench.
The curtain was used for the upper panels of the shell, sleeves and lining (blackout lining); while I used the boiler suit for the front facing, cuffs and storm guard; a portion of the camouflage for the collar; and the floral duvet cover for the lower panels of the shell.
My printed design was inspired by the military and navy influences of our provided fabrics and naval-based location. I decided to create a lattice/grid pattern and overlay a two-tone motif inspired by a compass. The colours of this print were chosen from the unwanted/excess shelf in the print room and definitely 'pop' against the navy of the boiler suit used for some of the focal points I placed the print itself. I also had to mend a couple of holes in the fabric, so decided to further link the colour choice by making the mend a visible one that linked in to the print design. This also provides an encouragement towards the care label we made as a group to help our target customer care for and customise their garment so it may last for years to come.
