ABOUT

Gender Abstraction was a personal journey into the world of ever-expanding vocabulary that individuals use to define their gender identity and expression. I explored what it meant during my final major project in college, researching how cultures around the globe view and accept genders beyond the binary. This led me to discover my desired target audience and specialism in the long-term.
I designed my chosen garments with a technique that was too perfect not to be utilised for this project, Subtraction Cutting. Throughout the images, you will see I experimented with different pattern parts as starting points and even sampled my ideas in 1/6th scale. The use of Subtraction Cutting resulted in two garments that looked quite abstract and unique, giving me the name for this project and an idea of how to display them in our final exhibition.
