ABOUT

Logo and flyer design for Samantha Emanuel, a UK and French based dancer and movement teacher.

After the Dance Synthesis project, Samantha wanted me to create a logo for her new Resilience workshops. After a bad accident and lengthy rehabilitation, she was just starting to teach again. The logo had to embody strength, water, waves, movement and undulations, but also fit the look and feel of the synthesis logo already created. The last consideration was that it would made into merchandise like t-shirts and tote bags.

After looking at waveforms, Japanese patterns and artists like Bruno Penabranca for inspiration, I wanted to take the thin/thick lines from the synthesis logo but soften them into curves for the Resilience one. I liked the undulating forms and movement these created. I also explored the triangle, which is the sturdiest shape as a 3D object, furthering the idea of resilience.

After exploring many font options like Moreno, Modum, Foro and Solitas Slab, the final typeface I settled on was Museo 500 in italic. The elegant slab feel of the font, with slight curves in the serifs, grounded the movement of the lines in the logo graphic. Bespoke kerning was applied when overlaying the type and graphic together. It gave the logo an extra edge.

Sam liked the 3 variants of the circular graphic so we kept those to use as a separate element in designs or animations for the future.

I also created a flyer for her series of Resilience workshops in Geneva, Switzerland, using the new logo and circular graphic.
