Endometriosis is one of the most common yet least understood pelvic diseases, affecting women, transmasculine, and non-binary individuals. It is estimated that in Germany, about one in ten menstruating individuals is affected by endometriosis, and 20-35% suffer from adenomyosis.

These chronic conditions are often either not diagnosed at all or diagnosed on average after 10 years, and they can be accompanied by intense pain as well as significant limitations in everyday life. However, these conditions have not yet been officially recognized as chronic diseases in Germany.

Gaps in research and knowledge complicate both diagnosis and treatment, and affected individuals are often not taken seriously when they seek help.

In 2022, photographer »Nietze« herself was diagnosed with endometriosis. This life-changing experience inspired her to launch the photography project »Hidden Heroes«, to better understand the condition and, above all, to find answers. Since then, "Nietze" has photographically documented more than 30 affected individuals in various locations across Germany and recorded their unique stories in writing.

The project also includes contributions from medical professionals, such as a chief physician from Potsdam and a sexual coach from Berlin. »Nietze« has also documented important demonstrations and actions by the Endometriosis Association Germany e.V.

A special highlight of the project is the support of Sookee, a well-known musician and activist who advocates for social justice and feminist issues. »Nietze« is still working on this project.
