ABOUT

Why I wrote this book:
I have believed a pervasive lie throughout my life and have noticed others equally disillusioned by it. The lie is that I could have no impact on the world, that I was insignificant and that our global world could never feel my effect. Conversely, a seemingly western world norm is to believe that we can be whomever and whatever we want to be, that "the sky" is the proverbial limit. This idea is so unrealistic that I keep hearing about friends who are seeking professional counselling to help them cope with "missing the mark". My counter argument is that our individual identity is purposed within a finite physical, elected social and inherently spiritual context. Obsessing over our own individualism is a dead-end pursuit.

About the book:
It consists of 14 contemplative sentences with illustrations that are designed to be detailed and thought-provoking. Each in itself is a part of the whole, as the visual narrative grows, shrinks and develops.

Its theme:
Exploring the relationship between individual and collective human identity over time. The book uses metaphors of boats planes and sea creatures.

Synopsis:
We are born into the middle of a story that began a long time ago. As we live, billions more people are being born into the story. Yet we are created with unique interests, insights, talents and longings. Together wiith others, we express and contribute those attributes within a broader context. We can't always see the far-reaching effects of our undertakings and often times the experience from ground-level seems overly simplistic. We might esteem or loath our attributes, but just as a starry sky is filled with bright, fading and clusters of stars, so is our opportunity to serenade others in this immense and intimate story that is not only about you or me, or any single one of us.

Target Audience:
This book is for: children approaching their teens from 8-12 years of age, teenagers with persistent sadness or anxiety and adults with pervasive loneliness or feelings of hopelessness.

The book is currently sold on local platforms and Instagram.

Hello! I pioneered a new technique for myself when I approached the illustrations for this book, using oil, watercolour and collage.

Thanks for reading!
