I kind of went natural/digital/natural/digital route for this book. Started off with some sketches and a dummy book layout with pencil and paper, then fixed the layouts and format in illustrator (because the moon shapes had to be die-cut in the finished book they had to be very precise). I then printed the layouts and painted with gouache to get the texture and base colour. Then scanned in the roughs and bounced between Photoshop and ArtRage for digital painting. ArtRage is capable of some really nice results despite it's low price. Hope that helps.
