As a co-producer of Nectarball: The Story of Cannabis, I am proud to reflect on the journey that brought this documentary to life. This 82-minute film explores the rich tapestry of cannabis history, culture, and its transformative impact on health and society. The idea for Nectarball came from a personal realization I shared with my partner, Mark Schulze. Since meeting in 1982, we had lived quietly in what we called the "green closet," aware of the plant's benefits but cautious in speaking openly about them. We knew it was time to share the deeper, often hidden story of cannabis, a story long obscured by stigma and misinformation. Our production journey spanned seven years and took us around the world. We interviewed more than 170 individuals, including cultural icons, scientists, farmers, veterans, and patients. Their stories shed light on cannabis's role in easing conditions such as PTSD, epilepsy, and chronic pain. They also revealed the plant's potential contributions to environmental sustainability and social justice. The title Nectarball honors a unique strain that Mark cultivated in the 1970s. It also connects to our personal archive of rare cannabis buds from the 1960s and 70s, a collection that includes legendary landrace strains like Fallbrook Red and Acapulco Gold. This legacy reminds us of a time when cannabis was more freely grown and exchanged, before it was criminalized. For me, the message of this film is not abstract. It is rooted in my lived experience. I have arthritic shoulders and two total knee replacements, yet I still ride my mountain bike with the guys into the wilderness, climbing rugged trails and descending singletrack with joy. Thanks to the medicinal use of cannabis, I continue to live an active, adventurous life. It has restored a quality of life that conventional treatments could not. With Nectarball, our goal was to bridge the gap between myth and reality. We wanted to create a documentary that educates, but also inspires empathy and a deeper understanding of the plant and the people who rely on it. The response has been moving. Viewers have reached out to share how the film changed their perceptions or helped them see cannabis in a new light. That kind of impact means more than awards. Nectarball: The Story of Cannabis is a labor of love. It is a tribute to those who have fought for access, for truth, and for healing. And it is an invitation to all who are ready to learn what this plant has to offer.
