I think it's a good idea to photograph things you either love or hate.
I hate clowns.
I'm not scared of clowns. The fear of clowns is 'Coulrophobia'
Once, I went to a clown convention at Bognor Regis Butlins holiday camp.
I photographed lots of clowns, pausing occasionally to be violently sick (I had food poisoning: it was not clown related).
I decided to host 'Clownface' parties at my studio in London. There was a dresscode: everyone had to be made up as a clown.
I started getting makeup artists that I knew to do my makeup for the parties and I would photograph myself in their artistry.
After the first five or six looks, M.A.C Cosmetics got on board and started introducing me to some other of the greatest makeup artists in the world.
I collaborated with 19 of the world's greatest makeup artists and Marilyn Manson.
Their brief from me, was to do ANY interpretation of 'clownface' they chose.
I wore the same small suit from Oxfam throughout.
M.A.C Cosmetics produced a beautifully printed book, designed by Peter and Paul.
I toured an exhibition of the work with makeup artists Sam Bryant and James o' Riley for M.A.C in New York, Paris, London and with Loni Bauer in Berlin: doing live makeup demonstrations on me and recreating their clown face looks from the book.
