ABOUT
United Utilities have undergone a period of extensive investment, part of which included a new £200 million extension to the Liverpool Wastewater Treatment Works on the banks of the River Mersey.
The new treatment works are situated on the site of the old Wellington Dock, part of the wider Port of Liverpool Dock complex and a site of significant historical importance. As part of the company’s commitment to maintaining the heritage of the site a complete refurbishment of the existing visitor centre was commissioned.
The permanent exhibition includes a brief history of Liverpool and its relationship with the Mersey, how trade and the docks enabled the city to grow and how regeneration, of which United Utilities have played a major part, has signalled the rebirth of the river.
An interactive, touchscreen game was also designed and developed allowing visitors to take control of a treatment works and help keep life flowing smoothly.
H.R.H. The Princess Royal officialy opened the new treatment works and visitor centre on 5 April 2016.
