In 2023, Monotype’s research division, Monotype Labs launched the Font Pairing tool which uses AI models to recommend font pairings.

By digesting large amounts of information, the software presents the designer with the best informed suggestions according to the given search parameters, coming up with pairings that are surprising and delightful, cutting out the many hours spent searching and prototyping.

The tool utilises Monotype’s vast library of fonts and analyses them using AI algorithms to determine which fonts work best together.

They fed the machine hand-picked pairs to train it, and then ranked the pairs in sample data it gave back. Then the model was scaled up to include more inventory on Monotype Fonts, but limited to sans and serif genres at this time.

Using the latest advances in AI allows designers and creatives to ramp up their abilities and open a new type of discovery. The tool enables designers to save time and streamline their design process, ultimately resulting in better design outcomes.
