Overview:
The Fantastic Scott Family Time Travel Show was conceived as an immersive, interactive live performance that challenged traditional linear storytelling by introducing multiple branching timelines and audience-driven narrative pathways. Performed twice nightly in 45-minute segments, the show combined innovative creative concepts with sophisticated technical execution to deliver a dynamic and memorable guest experience. The production also integrated social media engagement by encouraging guests to tag the resort on Twitter, significantly enhancing the attraction’s digital presence and marketing reach.

Project Brief and Challenges:
The core brief was to build a live show framework that could accommodate multiple branching storylines within a single performance, with smooth transitions between scenes and the ability to adapt in real time. This required a level of precision and reliability rarely demanded of a live show, as the narrative flow depended heavily on timing and cue synchronization.

Key elements of the brief included:

Designing and executing 8 standard narrative parts

Incorporating 6 distinct “time travel” destination sets representing alternate story paths

Creating two intros and two outros to bookend each part of the performance

Managing seamless transitions between all these segments in real time

Ensuring robustness to handle unexpected variables such as absent performers without disrupting the flow or guest experience

From a technical standpoint, the challenge was to develop a system that allowed these branching timelines to merge and diverge fluidly, maintaining the illusion of live time travel within the performance.

Approach and Execution:
My approach began with a thorough analysis of the narrative structure and how best to map it to the capabilities of available show control technology. I chose QLab as the central show control platform because of its flexibility and powerful cue stack management, which suited the branching cue sequences needed.

Over the course of the project, I programmed approximately 12 hours of timecoded material into QLab, broken down as follows:

8 standard narrative parts representing the core story

6 time travel destination segments providing alternate paths for the story

2 intros and 2 outros serving as controlled entry and exit points for each performance part

Each segment was structured as a separate cue stack, allowing precise control over the start, end, and transition points. The branching logic was implemented using “time travel” cues that acted as merge points, enabling the live show operator to select different narrative branches on the fly, or recover seamlessly from unexpected events by reverting to stable points in the timeline.

To achieve smooth transitions and avoid any jarring jumps or audio glitches, I programmed careful fade-ins, fade-outs, and cue releases embedded within the cue stacks. Additionally, I used QLab’s autoload and auto-follow features extensively to preload audio and video assets, reducing latency and ensuring tight synchronization across lighting, sound, and automation control systems.

One of the standout technical solutions was managing the absence of the guitarist, a key live performer. On occasions when the guitarist was unavailable due to prior commitments, I integrated pre-recorded audio tracks from previous performances into the live mix. This allowed the show to maintain full audio presence and immersive quality without interruption or compromise. The substitution was seamless to the audience and required no changes to the technical setup during the performance, showcasing the flexibility and resilience of the system.

Throughout the process, I deliberately avoided custom scripting to prioritize reliability and maintainability, recognizing that a simple yet robust system was crucial for daily operation with limited technical staff.

Results and Impact:
The final production successfully delivered a highly sophisticated, multi-threaded live show experience that went beyond standard theatrical formats. The branching narrative and interactive “time travel” element not only enhanced audience engagement but also increased replay value, encouraging guests to return for different show variations.

From a technical operations perspective, the automated timecoded design significantly reduced the risk of human error, simplified show management, and provided an efficient recovery path for unforeseen disruptions. This was especially important given the limited staffing resources, with only a small team responsible for running multiple shows across the resort.

Socially, the integration of guest interaction through encouraged Twitter tagging expanded the show’s marketing footprint organically, raising awareness and driving attendance.

Overall, this project showcased the powerful intersection of creative storytelling and advanced technical design. It demonstrated my ability to deliver complex, interactive live experiences that are artistically ambitious while operationally reliable and scalable. The success of this show opened new avenues for creative technology innovation within live entertainment and set a high standard for future immersive productions.
